Has anyone used this automated approach to audio calibration? It combines the Denon and Marantz app calibration with REW. I have found it useful. I have not tried the latest derivation that does not need the app since my computers are MACs and the approach has just been released for MAC.
OCA A1 EVO and derivations
Re: OCA A1 EVO and derivations
Interesting watch.
You have to be impressed with someone who has REW pinned to their taskbar. You better really make sure you trust that guy if you're going to run .bat files on your machine.
I'm sure this guy has a lot of other videos I haven't dug into. Where is he getting the 96 measurements? Is that a manual process before all this or am I missing something, are these some kind of standard file to "correct" your AVR before you do room-specific calibration?
I'm legitimately curious how much better this is than onboard calibration. I haven't bought an AVR in years but at this point I assume the weak point is still the calibration mic. When REW hit the scene using your PC was a significant step up in power and control but as I'm researching AVRs for the new house it seems 1) Odyssey has gotten a lot better, particularly if you get the highest version MultiEQ XT32 and 2) you can get a pretty reasonably priced ("low" high end) and get the option of paying for Dirac live, which is probably 95% as good as REW and I think its built into the AVR.
A big driver for me getting my Anthem was Anthem Room Correction (arc) and the fact that their mic is significantly better than the little "pyramid" mics that came with Denon, Marantz, Onkyo etc. However, I own a calibrated UMIK (I think that's what they're called) for use with REW.
That said, this seems like a good way to VERY high quality without spending $350 on DIRAC on top of your AVR or of course, if you're using an esoteric stereo integrated/separates and want to calibrate with a miniDSP because your equipment has no onboard DSP.

Re: OCA A1 EVO and derivations
This is another more automated version. A bit simpler and uses a combo of the Audyssey app and REW. It uses the Audyssey measurements as a base starting point but has a bunch of flexibility. It creates the filters and alignment in REW. You can choose your target curve and many other settings.
Works with Denon and Marantz. It is able to adjust for phase alignment of subs and mains. You can also align to the center channel.

I am currently using this version in our main media area. I have use Dirac (another system in our living room) and find this approach is really competitive at no cost. There are extensive threads on AVS

I haven’t fiddled with calibration for years. What landed on was first to use REW and miniDSP 2x4 to calibrate subs. Then run AVR calibration after. On ARC you can set a high pass where things don’t get EQd above that point. I think newer versions of Audessey allow this as well. I don’t EQ above 500hz because I feel like it sucks dynamics out.
