What's happening? What next?

Post by CJ »

When I launched this, I mentioned I set this up as kind of a test in my "home lab". Everything is running and stable. I still want to do some style customizations with a logo and maybe letting individuals pick between a light and dark theme but nothing overkill. I also want to get board-level email working but those are both probably post-move projects.

But in the meantime I've got everything running on a self-hosted linux server that isn't breaking a sweat. I'm backing up the board installation and the database nightly to my NAS which does near real-time cloud backups to a cloud storage solution I was already using for personal backups. That's all more than what was happening when I was using a paid hosting platform honestly. That was arguably, less inherent risk but low recoverability vs. more inherent risk but high recoverability. In the unlikely event of the old host losing everything we might have been up and running quickly but lost 6 months or more of threads and posts vs. maybe being down for a week but losing 24 hours or less of data.

In short, we're out of beta. If my server goes down or I lose internet or I lose power for more than 30 minutes, the board will be down. But there would be no permanent loss of content at this point.

If you want to reach out to past active members, please do. We have about 12 of the old crew registered. When the old forum shut down we had about 60 relatively active members, so if there is someone you particularly remember interacting with who isn't here, send them a note.
