4K Projectors

Post by Bill Stratton »

I still have my original Panasonic HD projector which I still love. I have a 103" acoustically transparent screen. I'd like to get a 4k projector but am concerned that my AT screen might not be adequate for the extra resolution. Looking for anyone that may have gone down this path or have suggestions for what projector to get.

And, hey CJ, thanks for starting this board. We'll see what happens, but it's sure fun seeing some familiar names from the HTT/HTL days.

Do you have a specific technology you’re angling for? I used to be particularly sensitive to DLP rainbow separation artifacts but I think things have gotten much better.

I’m in the market for a projector but I have a different, specific use case so probably not helpful to someone looking for a movie projector.

Still sitting on my JVC D-ILA from 2007. Wish it had more light output but mostly I'm still OK with it. I've looked at 4K replacements (also with more light e.g. laser) but not seriously.

CJ, not sure about what tech I'd go with. My current one is LCD. I'm quite happy with the blacks and color rendition. I don't need laser. I haven't really spent any time researching yet. It would be a hard sell with the CFO unless my Panny blows up.

What screen do you have if you don't mind me asking? The manufacturer may have an opinion about whether it will "support" 4K or not.

I bought the 103" Seymour AV Center Stage AT screen in 2008. I see they have make a lot of updates since then. I did shoot off an email to them to see if it would be appropriate for a 4k projector. I rather doubt it.

Hi company who sells projector screens? Yeah, is the screen I already own good enough?

Seymour AV is still developing screens. They got right back to me and said my screen was ok for 4k (even 8k). They have newer screens that are better for 4k at 9 feet (where I sit). They said I might see the weave of the screen fabric with 4k, but not enough to be a big problem. Huh, I expected a hard up-sell. It makes the decision process a bit easier if I can update my projector without also getting a new screen.

Bill that is great you can use your old screen. I am using an LG LED 1080p projector I purchased 8 years ago. Still going strong. About 6 months ago I entered a contest and won a 4k LG lifestyle Laser projector. My old LED projector was rated at about 1000 lumens but calibrated is likely 600. The new 4k laser is rated at 500 lumens.

The new laser is sharp and actually pretty bright. The wider colors is where it shines and is easy to move around. It is an improvement but not a must have.

This is the model LG CineBeam Q HU710PB 4K Smart Portable Projector with Auto Screen Adjustment, Auto Focus, RGB Laser, Up to 154% DCI-P3
