Layoffs, err, retirements

I am joining the ranks of the "Retired," albeit involuntarily. My company has informed me my services are no longer required as of 15 May. I'd say it smelled of age discrimination, but the entire semiconductor manufacturing support ecosystem is currently in turmoil and companies like Intel are laying off 20%, so it likely has more to do with business being off significantly. I am not the only one viewing the sharp side of the axe.

In any case, I plan to serve out these last two weeks in a professional short-timer manner, take a couple weeks or months off to depressurize, then figure out what, if anything, comes next. I've already been offered a couple consultant gigs, but that decision will come later.

Maybe not planned, but could possibly be the best thing in the long run. Get out of the rat race, and enjoy life.

Sorry to hear. Even if people are in a position to maybe not have to work it always sucks to not have it be on your own terms. I think things are going to get a lot uglier out there going forward.

OK, last day on the Silly Con Valley job was May 15 when they kicked me to the curb with a smaller than I'd like severance package. That Saturday we got into the car and drove to N. Cali to see the grandkids. Got home this past Tuesday. These last couple of days have been strange not "having to go to work." I've had a job continually since I was 11, so this is an adjustment.

I look forward to the day when my brain alarm clock will let me sleep past 0500

Wishing you all the best in your retirement David. Having known/followed you for many years now, I know you've dedicated a lot of your life into your job. I'm sure you know that all of your work-related regiment will take time to fade. Or perhaps reapplied to other, more personal endevours. In the meantime, I hope you allow the process to take it's course.

I'm five years into my self-chosen retirement as an electric power engineer/project manager. However, I'm also four years into my role as President (actually Commodore) for a long-standing, 400 member Social/Tennis/Waterfront Club. This role ends in August, thank God. Now if I can only train my brain to stop dreaming that I'm back at work...
